From a new life in spain, to an old life in britain, 'roaming brit' documents uncertain times!

Picture

On 31st January 2016, my partner and I left Southampton to start a new life as Expats in Gran Alacant, on the Costa Blanca. This blog will document our journey, as we navigate the Spanish system, travelling a path untried and untested. With Brexit looming, political turmoil in Europe, and an unpredictable future, harsh decisions must be made. Illness, family bonds, and a Change of heart all make for challenging times in the life of a 'Roaming Brit!'

Still Teaching Jamie!

Picture
Picture
Last night I taught Jamie how to cook a Chicken Stew.  Jamie said he never ate stew, because he never liked the look of it.  Yes Jamie eats things, depending of whether or not he likes the look of stuff.  Well, hopefully that will change.  He actually enjoyed what he cooked. This is the first time he has ever eaten stew, so for him this was a first step!

Sandwich

Not everything is going so well.  Sandwich making is not Jamie's forte, as you can see here!
Picture
So here we are into week three and things are still going great.  Yup that surprises me as well, but it is true, everything is fine and we are all still enjoying life here in Spain!

Jamie is still learning the ropes, where life is concerned.  I am still teaching him to cook, clean and look after himself.

Lessons

Picture
It still amazes me, that someone of Jamie's age can not cook, but if you haven't had too, then why would you bother!

I have had to fend for myself for many years and have never found it too hard.  I love cooking anyway and taught myself to cook.

Even when myself and Darrell got together, I have to say, he couldn't ook either.  I am not sure why people have never be shown or indeed why they have never bothered to teach themselves, the basics of survival.

Jamie is doing okay.  In fact, he isn't as bad as he thinks.  the only thing he needs to do, is listen, before jumping in head first.  I'm not sure he will ever make a good housewife for someone, but he will at least be able to look after himself, which in reality, we all need to do!
Picture
Well, no matter what happens, at least Jamie is happy finally, enjoying life that much more, learning to cook, speak another language and above all enjoying new experiences and cultures!  The most important thing, is he is finally doing what he wants to do, not what others expect of him!

Cats

We have let the cats out for the first time since we have arrived in Spain.  Precious is loving it here.  We have an open vista opposite Casa Caprice and she is enjoying being outside, after her journey down through Europe in the back of a van.  There are a few cats around here and Precious is already making her mark.  Lily however is content to stay inside, being the old girl she is!

Up the mountain, down the mountain

Picture
You do a lot of working when you live here.  I don't think I have ever walked so much in all my life, though after giving up smoking, I am finding it easier each day.

I wanted to get stuff done today.  I had things I wanted to do and somewhere I had to find, so a day of walking it would be!

Today was a great day for walking, The sun was out and it was one of those feel good days.  The best thing about living here in Spain is the disappearance of depression.  I have not as yet experienced anything akin to depression.  The fact that the sun shines every day, even though at times, at the moment, it can be a bit cold, really does lift ones spirit and create a wonderful sense of wellbeing, a feel good factor and a true level of cheerfulness, I haven't experienced in a very long while.  Yes I am still loving Spain!

Volunteering

Picture
After speaking to a local at Molly Malones, Irish Pub, who volunteers for a horse care charity, I've decided I would like to do some volunteering for a while, here in Spain.  I am a firm believer in the charity and went to visit there today, just to see what the place is like!
Picture
Volunteer, go on!  It really is a worthwhile thing to do.  Give as much time as you can.
Picture
It is great for the soul to do volunteering for a while, during the course of ones life and now, at this stage, I feel I would like to start giving something back, especially to the Country I now call home.

The charity shop is huge.  It sells furniture, as well as everything else you could possibly imagine.  The people are welcoming and I think I could be happy there for a while!

Giving Back!

Picture
As readers of my blogs know, I have done a lot of voluntary work over the years.  My favourite time was spent with 'Action for Children'.  They are one of the best UK Charities I know.  I am certainly not super rich and will need to work at some point, but at the moment, while I am able, I think it is time to do some great work.  I need to rekindle my faith back in the good work that charities do.  I need to realise, that despite, what happened to me, not all people and organisations are the same,  Hopefully this will be a first step, in that healing process!

Lunch

Picture
It was a ten minute walk into the centre from the Volunteer Shop and after mooching about in the sun for a bit, we popped to the local expat bar for a drink and something to eat!
Picture
Picture
We went to Barloko, popular with the Brits and Spanish alike.  They have chips to die for and the bar staff are lovely.  We have been there a few times and, always go, when in town!
Picture
Back home at Casa Caprice now.  I am shattered with all this walking. In the UK I rarely left Gay Capri, here in Spain, I am never at Casa Caprice.  Spain is certainly living up to all expectations and more! Still loving Spain! Still loving life!

    A place to call home
Finally, a place we can call home.  A community of like minded individuals, who used to call Britain home.  Now Spain is our choice, an altogether gentler, happier, sunnier and safer experience!
