From a new life in spain, to an old life in britain, 'roaming brit' documents uncertain times!

Picture

On 31st January 2016, my partner and I left Southampton to start a new life as Expats in Gran Alacant, on the Costa Blanca. This blog will document our journey, as we navigate the Spanish system, travelling a path untried and untested. With Brexit looming, political turmoil in Europe, and an unpredictable future, harsh decisions must be made. Illness, family bonds, and a Change of heart all make for challenging times in the life of a 'Roaming Brit!'

President Trump!

Inauguration

So The United States of America has a new President; Donald J Trump! To be honest, I never thought I would see this day; I feel very uneasy about the whole thing. I was no fan of Hilary Clinton; I would go so far, as to say, she should never had been the Democrats selected candidate for the Presidency, but what I think and what democracy throws up, are two entirely different things.  Hilary lost the Presidency, Donald Trump certainly did not win it.

I love politics, all politics and take a keen interest wherever I am.  I understand very little about the Electoral College system, that gave us President Trump and Hilary Clinton as the two candidates, for President of the USA, but like anyone, one has to accept the votes of those who took part and voted in a democratic election, that is democracy after all.  It was very sad, that Americans were left with two deeply flawed candidates, who didn't deserve their nominations in the first place.  Once again that is democracy!

Today, Donald J Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of The United States of America.  I know very little about this man, although since his election, have read much about him; I don't like what I am reading.  This person, has formed many dubious alliances over the years, in order to get what he wants. He is a bully and a sociopath, with a one track, focused mind; his own legacy!  It is in his nature, to care about what others think of him.  He is like a petulant child;  If he doesn't get his own way, then he throws tantrums, shouts and makes his point as vocal as he can, usually on twitter. Don't get me wrong, we have all done that, but not all of us are going to be President of the USA.  President Trump, gets hurt easily and his volatile nature is a concern, for all of us, who will be living under his tenureship, wherever you are in the world. A man who has his finger on the trigger for nuclear oblivion, in my view should be of sound mind, have sound judgement and only be concerned for his electorate, not his own self image!

I was talking to someone in my local square the other day.  They asked me what did I think would happen under his Presidency.  They were very vocal about what they thought of the man; they didn't hold back.  For me the question was a little more difficult to answer. Donald Trump is a difficult person to read.  He is right wing in every respect, which in itself isn't a major issue for me, but when you add in his numerous. off the  cuff comments, about what he could do, as President, alarm bells ring.

The man is clearly anti gay; as a gay American, I could have never voted for such a man.  I fear he will roll back many of the achievements the LGBTQIA community have secured over the years, through their fight against inequality and homophobia.  Donald is a misogynist; his comments about and treatment of, women, are not what one would expect from the President of the USA.  Women's rights in America are likely to be threatened during his time in office.  I am not sure if this man  is a racist in the traditional sense, but I do believe he is anti Muslim.  This is a difficult subject for me to tackle, as a gay man, because I disagree with the Muslim community, almost always. The way they treat people like me, women, christian's, westerners, indeed anyone who is different from them, is reprehensible and they should play no part in a modern society, because of this.  Unlike Mr Trump, I don't believe you can tar all Muslim's with the same brush.  To discriminate against a particular group, because of their difference to you, is wrong and needs to be addressed.

Having expressed all these negative points about the new President, there are still many areas of policy, where I, like many others looking in, just cant predict, an outcome. He is a successful man and may well have the attributes needed to turn America's economy around.  There is a large faction of American society that does feel disenfranchised; for them, he was their saviour.  I am not sure whether he will live up to their expectations, but their belief is what put him in office.

I think all of us, have to give President Trump the benefit of the doubt, until he makes mistakes.  We have very little to judge him and his time in office on, as yet.  We should wish him well in his endeavours and hope that some of his more unsavoury announcements are not instructed, whilst in Government.  He will have many others to give him advice, which he should listen to.  A Presidency is not made up of any one person, so there is hope that he may, just may, surprise us all in office, as he did when he won the Presidency!

It is important to remember, that Donald Trump, only won the election, because of President Obama's failure, to tackle the problem, of disenfranchised voters. Trump appealed  to those who had no voice; he offered them hope, when others didn't!

    A place to call home
Finally, a place we can call home.  A community of like minded individuals, who used to call Britain home.  Now Spain is our choice, an altogether gentler, happier, sunnier and safer experience!
