From a new life in spain, to an old life in britain, 'roaming brit' documents uncertain times!

Picture

On 31st January 2016, my partner and I left Southampton to start a new life as Expats in Gran Alacant, on the Costa Blanca. This blog will document our journey, as we navigate the Spanish system, travelling a path untried and untested. With Brexit looming, political turmoil in Europe, and an unpredictable future, harsh decisions must be made. Illness, family bonds, and a Change of heart all make for challenging times in the life of a 'Roaming Brit!'

November!

As months go, I really am not enjoying November, probably my worst month of the year, in Spain at least. In the UK, I used to love November and the run up to Christmas, it's very different here. I have really started to feel cold, not during the day, it is still a very pleasant 23 degrees or more; no the time I feel the chill in the air is at night, when temperatures can drop as low as seven degrees, not cold by British standards, but certainly by Spanish; a huge drop from the heat of the day to the fresher conditions at night.

This month feels even worse than usual; as my body continues to suitably adjust to the Spanish weather, year on year, I am feeling the cold winter far more. Living at the top of a ravine in a north facing house, also doesn't help. These Masa built properties are just not constructed for all year round occupation. With no carpets or central heating, November is colder inside, than out. When I go to bed at night, the duvet on the bed feels cold to touch, almost damp, which of course isn't great heath wise; the only way to keep warm, is to wrap up, even in bed; electric blankets and hot water bottles a must.

Of course this November is the month we decamp to our new house. I don't really relish packing boxes, it  is a big source of angst for me. Moving is stressful, especially when Darrell and I are both working and have little time to organise this move. Darrell works nights, which is difficult for both of us. He finds it hard to sleep during the day, I have to be as quiet as a mouse, so packing boxes is impossible and I find it hard to sleep, without Darrell; luckily there are only a few days to go, before we leave Casa Caprice, so I shouldn't complain too much.

I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has offered to help us move; just last night two customers offered to lend us their people carrier. Gran Alacant comes into its own when someone needs help or advice; this kind of community spirit just doesn't exist anywhere else, especially in the UK. On Saturday, we have some friends coming over and should have everything done relatively quickly, which has to be a good thing, the sooner we are out of this house the better. It was never meant to be a long term option, living here, we picked it blind from the internet, without knowing the area. Living on top of Heart Attack Hill, was always a challenging option, despite the beautiful, stunning views from our house.

My bloody android box, containing all the British television channels broke this month too. I have no idea what is going on back home, what's in the news or the state of play in Coronation Street. I am currently having to watch Spanish television or DVD's; at least on Saturday I will have access to cable TV again, it can't come soon enough, just like the end of November; the end is finally in sight, hallelujah!

    A place to call home
Finally, a place we can call home.  A community of like minded individuals, who used to call Britain home.  Now Spain is our choice, an altogether gentler, happier, sunnier and safer experience!
