Then and Now - 1 Year on!

    Picture
    Picture
It has been one year since the beginning of my relapse, that finally ended on 31 January 2016, when we  left The UK and moved to Spain.  When I actually look back at the photographs from that time.  I am horrified at just how bad I actually looked.

Even comparing two years ago, to today, way before I relapsed, there is a marked difference in the way I look.  Spain has made me feel young in ways, you would't believe. Of course the biggest factor for me, is just being out of The UK.  What happened to me, over the last year, was something I could only forget when I took a leap of faith and did what I had to do, what we were told to do and the advise we were so happy to eventually follow!

Here we are one year on, from those traumatic days, when Natalee took care of me, cooked for Jason and was there to see us through the worst of situations. Natalee was there throughout my illness and without her, I would not necessarily have recovered so well or indeed as quickly.  She was a rock of support, at an extremely traumatic juncture in both Darrell's and my own life.  I have never forgotten what she did and never will!

Most of what I went through in April 2015, has become a blur, a distant memory and something I just can not recall, fully.  The mind has a marvellous inbuilt trigger, that prevents long term damage, by storing terrible memories, somewhere safe, until we are ready to face them.  To be honest I am not fully sure, I will ever want or be able to recall events completely.  Maybe I will just not want to remember, what is essentially a period of my life better forgotten in all respects.

So what have I learned over the last year, if anything?  Well, the experiences I endured, as bad as they were, have taught me much about people, the nature of some of the worst kind of human beings and the amazing abilities of others, who have been the greatest source of inspiration over this period.

The friends I have today, are not the ones I ever expected to be close, a year ago, with two exceptions.  The ones that pretended to be concerned, who offered false words of hope, who said they would help and the ones who were good with words, making you feel at ease and comfortable and the ones that are now long gone. These were the people, who were only there to take advantage of a situation, that they knew they could manipulate.  Thank god they are gone, thank God I got through, realising exactly who and what they were.  These were extremely hard lessons to learn and hurt tremendously, knowing the truth.  There was absolutely no other way of securing a future for myself and Darrell, with these people in our life,  They were partly to blame for what happened, were complicit in the continued events and were of course just using us, because they were unable or unwilling to stand up and be decent human beings.  These were not only friends and family but they were also colleagues and trusted superiors, who were nothing more than game players, degenerates and people who have no place in a normal society!

I do sound bitter, don't I, well I suppose I am to an extent.  I am not bitter about what happened,  because really it has taught me those lessons we all need to learn in life, hard lessons, but necessary to grow and move forwards in life.  No the bitterness and lies, in discovering that those you thought were close, were nothing more than liars and  terrible people, who we should have never trusted in the first place, was a lot to handle!

Natalee arrives tomorrow evening and she is one of the good ones.  She wasn't fake, a liar or complicit in anything.  She was actually there for us, for no other reason than to help us through,  She never asked for anything and unlike others, never used us!  A great girl who is coming to live with us and restart her life!

It was a busy day at Dunbar's. Sunday's have always been busy and naturally are the longest day of the week for me.
As usual, I had a drink after work.  Not only had it been a long day, but it was a hot one too and a pint always goes down great after cooking in a kitchen.  Inevitably one drink turned into more and it was nice sitting talking to Mandy and her daughter Zoe in the bar and just goes to show, how welcoming the Dunbar family are.

We popped out, with Zoe after Dunbar's closed, to Zest for a few more drinks, where we got to know her further.  She is  a great girl and a delight to know!

It's been another great few days here in paradise and we are still loving our new life in Spain.  We are of course looking forward to seeing Natalee tomorrow night and will keep you updated, with all of our progress, during our time, living and working on The Costa's!

    Journey of Life!

    Image description
Yesterday was another great day for me in Gran Alacant.  My job is going well at Dunbars. I am working with some great people and am being taught some amazing stuff, by some Knowledgeable colleagues. It does seem weird, doesn't it, that so far, since moving to Spain, I personally have not got a bad word to say, about the people I have met here. That is not true about every aspect of Spain, but so far the residents have been everything I could have hoped for and more.  One has to remember, this is only the beginning of my time in Spain, so as I move forwards and begin to integrate further into this community, my views may of course change. It is literally a matter of time and judgement!

I was a very poor judge of character.  That was one of my downfalls in life.  Being able to tell the bad from the good, was always a problem and it has caused me no end of problems in the past.  Nasty people, who have an alternative agenda are very good at pretending to be, all things to all people.  Even the worst of people, can project an air of normality and calm.  To them, this is just a way of gaining something from you, in order to further their own ends, as I can testify!  Even today, even after what I have been through, I still find it hard to work people out. Maybe I do know how to work individuals out, maybe I just don´t want to, take them on face value or just foolishly block out, what I really know is true. Whatever the reason, even at forty four years old, I have to change.

Taking advice from others is an important aspect to learning from your mistakes.  I am a great listener and am listening to all those who wish to share their words, for all the right reasons.  Most people who live here, have had property for at least ten years or more and they know the local community well.  Their help has and indeed is invaluable.  There are all sorts of people living and working in an area of about 30,000 people.  Everyone from different walks of life, each person with a different past and all of us mixing together, in a melting pot of views and opinions. Inevitably, there will be problems, gossip and rumblings from some of the less savoury individuals, in future, but these are things we will have to deal with in time, as we integrate further.

We were given lots of free advice last night, from three people, who know all too well, what this place can be like.  At the moment, we see things through rose tinted glasses and believe that living here, will be the saviour of all our problems, everything is perfect and there are no bad people living in GA.  Well as we are fully aware, now, that could not be further from the truth.  All communities have rotten eggs, gossips and stirrers.  We have all met that person, who presses buttons and winds people up, tells lies and pushes people to their limits.  In many respects, It can be an aspect of human nature to actually act in the most distasteful way, in order to get a reaction.  Cause and effect if you will!  These sorts of people, like to play games.  Other peoples lives make for some truly fun times for others, always at the expense of people, who's only failing, was to trust someone they shouldn't. I think all of us know someone like that and many more of us, know a lot of them. Even the most astute person can be fooled by someone else, someone clever, someone devious, into believing that they are a true friend.  Manipulators can be perfect at getting what they want and if they don't, that's when things start to get nasty.  I, like many of my readers, have had first hand experience of this and the aftermath is not pretty.  The debris left behind is beyond measure and picking up the pieces can be very difficult.

People come to Spain for many different reasons.  Many come here to retire.  The weather is the selling point.  When you suffer with ailments in old age, the sun can be a great cure.  Arthritis almost disappears, depression becomes unimportant and many of the harsh realities of British life no longer rate.  After all the climate is a great healer in Spain.  It really can solve, not everything, but  at least a large measure of what people in Northern Europe suffer with.  Other people have come to Spain to work. Freedom of movement in Europe is important, and as much as people like me, have come to work here, many more Spanish take up opportunities in The UK.  Work life can be hard in Spain, with high unemployment and restrictive employment laws being a major stumbling block.  However if you are prepared to work hard and have the right attitude, then life here is good.  Then there are those who are running away from something, usually themselves, but of course they would say different.

It can be easy to restart your life in a foreign land, Darrell and I have done it many times before and although initially difficult, for me, I have settled in better than I would have ever expected, unlike past endeavours.  This was a bit like a last chance saloon, at the beginning, and last chance saloons never work.  This was more about the way I perceived our situation back then, when actually, it would have been better to look at it as a positive, forward thinking step.  It wasn't until I came here, realising that this was our life now, our new home and our future, that my outlook changed. As a rule I hate being forced to do anything, it is not in my nature, but this forced move, has become the best move, the only move, the first move of the rest of our life together.

I have no idea how long we will be living in Spain, but with our plans to also live with family in Croatia for a while, finally ending our life's journey in Australia, we have much to be thankful for.  The journey of life is not supposed to be easy, if it was, we would never learn anything.  Although our life has been hard, for me, now is the easiest part.  Finally living the life I always wanted, away from the dreadful influences of the past and without the turmoil that engulfed our life for so long!

    Peace and love always!

    R.I.P. Ronnie!

    Picture
Before I write today's blog, I just wanted to comment on the death of Ronnie Corbett CBE.  I have just heard the news, as I was listening to The BBC World Service.

Ronnie was a big part of my childhood, growing up in the 1970s and 80s.  One of the funniest people on television, he continued his career in the arts and raising money for charity, right up until his death.

My best wishes and love to his family, friends and fans at this time.  You will be sadly missed by millions!

    New Me!

    Picture
We have been in Spain, exactly two months now and haven´t looked back once.  It has been a very productive time for me, forgetting the past and
    Picture
    Picture
everyone in it, who caused harm and discord both in our life and of course theirs, dragging us into feuds and drama as often as they could.  For me this is the happiest I have been  for many years and I am determined to enjoy my time here, because this is where I want to be and live my life.
They are a very welcoming lot here and you can't help but fall in love with this place and everything that comes with it, the people, lifestyle, sun and community spirit.  It is truly a wonderful time to be alive.

In keeping with my new sense of optimism, I decided to dye my hair.  OK a bit of a mid life crisis, but my grey hair and beard were making me look washed out and feeling old, so a box of 'Just for Men', did the trick.  It really is amazing, just how good you feel after tidying up your appearance and if not looking, at least, feeling a bit younger in looks and spirit.

Personally I doin´t think it looks too bad.  Jamie came in from work yesterday morning, after I had done my hair, not recognising me, calling me mate, so I suppose in that respect, it worked.  Makes me look ten years younger, so I am told!

The beaches here on The Costa Blanca are beautiful.  I have stayed in other parts of Spain, indeed the World, but you can´t beat the long stretches of white sandy beaches along the coast line, especially in this area.

We spend a few hours there, in Los Arenales, adding to the relaxed feel and air that I am at least enjoying now. A far cry from City life in Southampton!

    Beach!

    Picture
It was another hot day yesterday, just as it is today, so we decided to pop to the beach.  People who know me well enough, understand I can´t swim and do not particularly like just sitting around on a pile of sand doing nothing, so to get me there was a chore in itself. Still I took the laptop and did some writing

    Zest!

I finished work at 10pm and we popped out to Zest.  Jamie and Darrell were at Dunbars, when I completed my shift and Jamie was already well on the way to getting smashed.  It doesn't take a lot, though his drinking tolerence is getting better.

Met some new faces and some old ones in The Square, and as usual had a great night. I left early to get Jamie home, leaving Darrell to chat at the bar!

    Marmite!

Starting up a new side line business, decorating Marmite jars, turning them into mobiles for windows and porches.  A lot of people here in GA, do many different things, as well as their jobs.  A doubt very much I will sell any, and will probably end up, with thousands of Marmite jars and nothing to do with them.  Just another hobby, for me to keep myself occupied, whilst in Spain.

Anyway, have to go, and get some more rays of sun.  It's been another successful few days for me.  My work contract will be through soon, I've paid for my Social Security number today, which will entitle me to free health care, access to pensions as well as any future benefits.  I'm still enjoying my job at Dunbars, the sun is out and Summer is well and truly here.

I had forty messages of support over the last few days, from friends in The UK, happy to see us doing well.  It does seem that other people's happiness can indeed breed positivity in others.  People both here and abroad in Britain continue to be a great source of inspiration and we look forward to welcoming many of you, to our new home, this summer!

    Peace and Love!

    Easter Sunday at Dunbars!

Have a double shift today at Dunbars, Easter Sunday.  It´s 5.30pm and I´ve just got home from shift number one and enjoying a few hours siesta, before returning for 7pm.

Dunbars put on a great carvery today, and it was a fantastic success. Plates full and stomachs were bulging. Lunch time was a resounding success!
When I got in for my shift at 1pm, the place was already heaving.  There were lots of happy, holiday faces, in the warm Spanish sun, celebrating Easter Sunday.

I love cooking and enjoy seeing the satisfaction on peoples faces, when they have experienced, decent, home cooked food,
    Picture
    Picture
There is a lot of preparation involved in creating the perfect Sunday Carvery and everyone at Dunbars have been working hard to offer, what I think is the best Sunday lunch in GA.

It was wonderful to have such great feedback from everyone who ate at the restaurant.

Home made soup or prawn cocktail starter, a choice of three meats, the best roasties in Spain and everything fresh.

If you are about, pop in to Dunbars, seven days a week and experience some of the best food around.  You´ll love it!

Darrell cut Jamies hair, finally, and we spoke to Natalee and our Lee Ralph on Skype.  She will be out here in Spain soon.  Really look forward to seeing her. I know, with all her experience in Hospitality, she can be a great success here!  Also good to hear from Lee and how nothing has changed in Southampton, which is no surprise to us!

Darrell and I went out and got a little drunk tonight.  We hadn´t done that in
a while, so when he picked me up, still wearing my chef´s whites, we popped over to Dicks and had a few too many drinks.  We spent the evening with Barbara, one of the first people we met here in  Spain, she is adorable.  She has been great at letting us know the in´s and out´s of things here in GA, is always honest and will always go out of her way to help new comers.  We appreciate all the help and advice we receive here, because without it, we would be just stumbling on, instead of feeling happy, settled and at peace with where we are!

Wow, it´s been a hot one today.  It was 40 degrees on my solarium earlier.       I´ve just finished the evening shift at Dunbars and worked in the morning as well, after thinking it was Sunday and the clocks had changed!
I´m really enjoying being back cooking in a kitchen and am getting better each day. It helps when you have good employers and I am already very fond of Mandy, the proprietor and Grandson Reece.  I am working in their family restaurant and it really is a family affair.  They have been very welcoming and perfect to work for.

I have worked for many organisations in the past, as well as also owning my own business, but have never worked, so close to where I live, employed by a local family.  Initially I had no idea what to expect, but very quickly, I felt completely at home and happy working with amazing people.

Mandy and her husband are grafters, in every sense of the word.  Mandy works long hours at front and back of house and for that reason, you know you are truly working, with professional people.

Loyalty of staff can be a problem here in Spain, with other bars and restaurants poaching staff, so you can understand how weary employers can be, with new comers. Working for six months and having six months off can also be a difficult working practice to get used too, especially coming from the UK.  So you can imagine, how surprised people are, that I am actually doing so well here.  That is mainly due to the nature of all those who work for Dunbars.  They indeed have my loyalty and I look forward to spending the next six months working for them!

Just a quick blog tonight, as I´m off to bed shortly, I´ll do my best to write as often as I can, although the entries will be a little shorter, with a larger, more comprehensive blog, at the end of each week.  Love to everyone in The UK!

    Dunbars!

I have been working at Dunbars, here in Alicante for a few weeks now.  I am enjoying doing what I used to do twelve years ago.  I am working for The Dunbar Family, in their restaurant.  They are great people to work for, honest, up front and a wonderful inspiration, for me, in my endeavours.  I feel proud to be a part of their team, working hard, to produce home cooked, fresh food, from locally sourced ingredients.

I have agreed to help set up a website for the restaurant, which will be up and running shortly.  I encourage you all to come and sample the food, where you will be offered a warm, friendly welcome, by all the staff!
