    Britain and Europe!

    Image description
I have written about Europe and Britain's relationship with the continent many times before.  It is one of those subjects I have always had strong views about and I am passionate about what my home Country should do, in order to progress, continuing a positive relationship, with our European counterparts.  Positivity is the key here, because ever since we joined the European Community, all those years ago, our relationship has been nothing but positive.  The whole process of applying to join, rejection and recrimination, set the stage, for what has been a terrible partnership.  To be included in any form of group, should be an inclusive experience.  Working for common aims, with others who have common goals, should be liberating.  This has never been the case with The UK, Europe project.  There has been very little alacrity between us and them!

Now living on the continent myself, I have taken to reading much about the European project.  Although now an expat, I am allowed to vote in the British Referendum, because I have been out of the Country for less than fifteen years, and as I have always done, I will be exercising my right, to have my say.  I am a political animal, having studied politics at University and want answers, before I put that cross in the box.  It is important for all of us to gather as much information as we can, before making a choice, because if we, as a Nation get this wrong, it will damage our future completely and we will not be able to put it right!

Currently I live in a relatively small community and my friends are mainly expats it has to be said.  When you pop along to the squares and strips for a drink in the evening, the main topic of conversation, as you would expect, is about the EU Referendum in The UK.  Everyone has an opinion, as to what we should or should not do.  Everyone will claim to be an authority on expat politics, and their views are best.  Well, I tend not to listen to gossip and rumour any more, so equally, I will make my own mind up, as to what I will eventually vote.

It is interesting, talking to local Brits, in Spain, just how anti European they are.  It was odd to me, that people who choose to live and work over here, have such feelings, but as time has moved on, I have realised why they are as they are.  You must remember, that although we are living in Spain, we are first and foremost, living in an expat community.  Before I came to Spain, I did not want to live predominantly in this kind of area and wanted to integrate fully with The Spanish, but we fell into Spanglish life instead.  This was no accident, because in reality there was no real alternative.  The expat community have been instrumental in helping us adjust to our new life. Without them, life would have been very difficult.  These people, unlike any I have ever met, have gone out of their way to ensure we have become part of this fantastic neighbourhood, a microcosm of Britain itself!

Life here is very different to you imagine. All of the beliefs you have, the plans you made and the aspirations you hoped to achieve, have changed fully and completely.  The Spanish are very different to the British.  When migrants come to The UK, they are welcomed, in the main. with open arms and treated equally, almost immediately.  This is of course, in the spirit of the union we currently exist in.  The Spanish, although polite, are not so happy with us living and working in their Country.  Unless you are born here, it is very difficult, if not impossible to get a job, that in reality is always given to a native person.  They will always get priority!  Discrimination towards other nationalities is rife.  When you also consider that unemployment and the economy is in a terrible state in Spain, you begin to see just how bad things are.  It does seem sometimes, that you don´t have to be good at a job here, just so long as you are Spanish.  In Britain, equal opportunities exist, here they do not.

So the expat community stick together and help each other out, just as the Spanish do.  It is thanks to them only, that all of us are working, have a car and know how to meander our way through the Spanish bureaucracy.  You can understand why, these people may well be anti European.  In The UK, we follow every UK directive with gusto, in Spain, they don´t.  They do what they want, not what Europe demands.  From Health and Safety, human rights to employment, Spain sets its own agenda, yet back home, we continue to follow laws that quite simply do not work for us, or indeed Europe!  It becomes obvious why those in The UK,  get hacked off with having to pay for a Europe that only Britain seems to follow, while all the other members just do what they want.  When you live on the continent, you really can see things for what they are!
On Spanish television, there was a Minister from the interim Government here, who spoke at length about the possible British exit from the EU.  It is clear that Spain are feeling vengeful, as the Spanish often do.  The Minister stated that all of The British would be deported, for being illegal.  Homes and businesses would be confiscated and jobs lost.  The Spanish are famous for their rants like this over here, and most people take what they say, with a pinch of salt.  However, Spain could quite legally do all the things they threatened, dismantling whole communities, such as the one I live in and removing infrastructure to erase all trace of the British.  These were venomous words, but they have to be taken seriously, when I decide how to vote.

Would Spain really go that far?

    Image description
It is doubtful that the Spanish  would carry out the threats it has made on Spanish television.  The tourist industry relies on the British, as do many businesses.  There are also many more Spaniards in The UK then there are British in Spain, so would they really want to risk retaliation on a massive scale.

The biggest problems are for first and second home owners, for people using the Health Service here and those who are retired.  Where would a Brexit leave them?

Of course there would be changes and rights would be lost.  Access to free Health Care, is likely to cease in Spain.  This would be particularly harmful to those who are retired and rely heavily on the services offered by the Spanish.  In reality they would be made to pay for the majority, if not all the services they use.

If we vote to leave, all of us expats, in whatever European Country, would become illegal over night, and one would assume it is up to each Country to have their own response to what would essentially be a crisis.  Treaty's would be ripped up and this would become the biggest disaster, The European Union has ever faced.  All of us continue to speculate as to what will happen, but none of us really know.  It will be up to each individual Country to make its own choice.

    My view!

Before I moved to Spain, my views were clear.  I was extremely anti Europe.  The European Union is probably the most wasteful organisation I have ever known.  Stupid laws introduced, for no other reason than to standardise Europe, turning it into a super state.  Bureaucrats are over paid and unelected and quite simply answerable to no one! The United Kingdom pays in far too much money, to a bloated, far too powerful and absolutely out of touch Union that really has no place in the World, in its current form.

When you look at other European Countries and their Governments, you can see how similar in Nature Brussels is.  Corruption, expenses, the European Courts, all unfit for purpose.  Over paid Officials, have for too long been allowed to get away with daylight robbery, where those they are supposed to represent, continue to suffer, through high unemployment and terrible services, as they continue to take huge sums of money from the European Gravy Train!

Europe is dead, in its present form!

    Yes or No to Europe?

Everyone has to make up their own mind, as to which way to vote of course.  Personally I believe that we should vote to leave the EU now.  This was a hard decision to take, considering my home is now in Europe and the consequences of my vote could be detrimental to me.

I don´t believe the horror stories that we are being told about a no vote.  Countries have agreements with one another, whether or not you are in Europe.  Spain has far more to loose than the UK, out of retaliatory measures, so should think very carefully before they put inflammatory Ministers on the television.  Remember Spain has one of the worst performing economies in Europe and should think before it makes stupid statements, let alone acts upon a barrage of vitriol and emotive language used to win votes and keep their own jobs!

Putting my own position aside, because would be a selfish view, I will be voting to leave The EU!

    Zest!

Had another fabulous night at Zest on Wednesday.  We were only supposed to go to Unide to grab a few items for dinner, but ended up turning one pint into another drinking session.  Now I knew this would happen, as soon as I set foot in The Square!  It never just ends at one pint.  As it happened there were loads of people down there we knew.  Many of them, we were introduced to during our first week here in Spain.  Bret and Lee had a few drinks with us and Roger was down from Barloko, so all in all it was a great afternoon and evening!
So with a raging hangover I was called in to work this morning.  Needless to say I was still half asleep when I got there, but Mandy made me a bacon sandwich, we had some fantastic customers in and it was 30 degrees outside.  Who could ask for more!

    Get Involved

    Picture

It's easy just to sit by and do nothing.  I knew many people like that.  The ones that 'don´t want to get involved!' These are the ones you have to watch.

You should always get involved, to help those you love.  Never forget, you may need their help one day.  Go on, get involved and don´t sit on that fence!

    Renewal

    Picture

Today I wanted to talk about a subject very close to my heart, RENEWAL.  For me the word renewal, is a positive, forward thinking word, that always gives me great hope for the future. It is also something I have a lot of experience of, especially recently. Renewal is something we should all experience in order to grow and move forward in life.  Without renewal, lives, people and situations become stale and harder, so although scary at times, to renew ones life is to experience rebirth!

Coming to Spain on the 31 January 2016 was a big deal for me,  Actually it was probably the biggest and hardest decision, both myself and Darrell had ever had to take.  Our life had been turned upside sown, nearly a year before, with revelations we could not quite come to terms with.  At that time we were given very little official help and took advice from those in authority, in order to try and work our way through, a huge amount of revelations that were quite simply dreadful.

About a year before this, myself and Darrell had been discussing the possibility of moving to Spain, before these revelations had surfaced, but due to circumstances, that we now know, could be related to what happened to us, we decided against it. When you hear cold, hard facts and realised that the story of our life, was not necessarily of our making, I don't mind telling you, how devastated, shocked and troubled I was.  This was the defining moment in our life.  The point, when you have to take huge leaps of faith and jump into the unknown.  This was the most disturbing time, yet, it was also the most liberating.  Lives begin and end, through trauma and dramatic times and ours was so drama fuelled, it was the spark and ignition into our new, current journey.

At the time, when revelations surfaced, that were hard to understand, the muddle and confusion experienced could have quite easily tipped us over the edge into an even larger abyss, or worse.  How we dealt with the news was crucial to our survival.  For a while, things went pear shaped and we coped badly, very badly. There were times, I believed we would never accept what had happened and move forward.  I was far more reluctant to leave my Country and home than Darrell was. I had tried to settle in Australia twice before and found the move impossible. In my view, nothing would be different in Spain and we would just end up in an even worse position.

This time I was wrong.  Not only have I fallen in love with my new home, but I have also fallen in love with Spain, its people and the way of life.  There is very little here that I don't enjoy and to be honest, these things are really about the Government and paperwork, things I can not change anyway.  Renewal for me this time, has worked. My life is happier than ever.  I am spending quality time with quality people, finally and have left behind the losers of the past, who were our major stumbling block to happiness.  Even while living in Spain, the two of us, as well as Jamie, were still the subject of lies, gossip and rumour as well as further revelations, to add on top of those we already knew.  I have discovered that life really is about where you are living and the people you associate with.  The satisfaction for me, is knowing the worst of those we knew are still there, in that miserable Country, we used to call home!

Of course  transition to a new life, has not always been as easy for me.  As I have mentioned, Australia was absolutely impossible.  I found it extremely hard adjusting to life in Perth.  I have no idea what the specific problem was and it was probably a combination of many different things, from people and wildlife to the heat and laid back nature of life there.  In reality, I was most certainly way to young to appreciate living in Australia.  At 23 years of age, I felt terribly isolated and had just too many difficulties with life thousands of miles away.

Renewal raised its head again in 2000, when Darrell and I took a business opportunity, moving to the middle of nowhere, taking on a restaurant, garage and shop.  At first the change was easy.  It was only twenty odd miles away from where we used to live, so isolation was never a problem, the people in the village were fantastic and likable and welcomed us with open arms and the peace and tranquility was a welcome break from City life.  Of course, just like the story of our life things were not going to stay that way.  Circumstances changed and our business closed. Dishonest people, lies and hidden truths bought our life there to an abrupt end and once again it was all change with Darrell and I, as we moved on to another chapter.

From my Southern roots, further renewal and a move up to the Lancashire, Yorkshire boarder.  We had bought a house there a few years before as a holiday home, so when we closed the business, it was logical to move there.  It was a culture shock, living 'up north', more so than Australia.  It really was like moving to a different world.  Northern people can be the best people in the World, but they were not very welcoming, at least for us, as gay southerners.  If your face fits, as they say.  Although working, both Darrell and I felt even more isolated than we had done, in our whole life.  Within three years we were back living down South.  In 2008, I got a new job, and the most recent revelations, explain the story of our life until we moved to Spain!
    Image description
Renewal is important for each and everyone of us.  We will all go through difficult periods in our life, when we have to consider the unthinkable and change dramatically in order to survive and move forwards in life. Without a new start or change we would fail to move on in life and would suffer from the same mistakes we made in the past.   Of course we all make errors of judgement, sometimes huge ones, but we do need to learn from them.  Even now at 44 years old, I am still making the same stupid choices, I made in the past, though this time, I am determined not to continue down that same road.  A fresh start, new people and a different culture, will help to limit the mistakes of the future.

Some people have messaged, asking if we were not just running away from our past. You could look at it that way, but this time, there was no option.  Legal advice gave us answers we did not want to hear.  Those advising were blunt, to the point and realistic. For the first time in my life, I at least, followed advice!  So far they were correct, with what they told us.  If we had stayed in the same place, we have no idea, if we would still be here today.  This was never a choice we made, but one that was thrust upon us by others.  Luckily being forced to make tough choices has made us think the unthinkable and we have been able to rebuild our life into something worth celebrating.

Happiness is the key.  We were deeply unhappy in The UK, especially towards the end. As more and more revelations surfaced, as more and more people came forward with the truth and as it became clear that many individuals were involved, it took its toll on all of our lives, not only those directly involved, but also friends and family, who understood what had happened.  It affected countless lives and those responsible should be bought to account one day.  It has to be said however, that without these distasteful cretins in our life, we would never had been forced to move abroad and finally  enjoying our life; thanks for that guys.  On the day you are finally uncovered for what you did, I will make sure I am there.  Be fully aware, I will come to see you pay for what you have done.  Until then keep on trying to destroy others.  Evidence will get you in the end!

    Peace and love always!

    First and Last!

    Picture

A few days of firsts and lasts!  Darrell started his new job at the airport and said he thoroughly enjoyed it.  It has been a long time coming, but suddenly everything has just fallen in to place.  When you have been through the roughest of times, through no fault of your own, the people responsible have still not been bought to book, yet and you have jumped through hoops, paperwork and legalities for no other reason, than to do someone else's dirty work, it can take you a long time to recover from that.  This was the week Darrell recovered and his life finally moved forwards!

Natalee also started her new job.  She had spent a long time looking for work in Southampton, so for her, getting the job she wanted in Spain was a big bonus. After all the talk of unemployment and difficulties in Spain, each one of us, have proved people wrong.  On top of that we are also living in a Country we love, away from the worst people we have ever met and surrounded by new friends, who are our saving grace. They are the best of people!  It has been a long time coming, but finally we all feel at ease!

Sadly it was the last day in Spain for Zoe as well.  I have enjoyed spending time with her and have had a fabulous time in her company, although my drinking has gone through the roof!  At least we have some wonderful memories and I feel sure you will be back out to Spain as soon as you can!

It has been another memorable few days in Spain, new friends and old and the weather has been bloody gorgeous!

Everyone is working at Casa Caprice and looking forward to a busy and successful summer season.

When you do reach the bottom in life, really pick yourself up and start again. I can guarantee you, it was the best decision we have ever taken in our life. Life is for living, so go and live it!

    Jack Yallop

It has also been the first anniversary, since I met Jack.  He was a friend from day one.  Jack is a generous and wonderful person to know.  Natalee video called him  the other night and it was great to talk to him.

So to you Jack, thanks for being a friend, right up until the day we left The UK,  Come and see us soon!
