    Mollie & Wildling!

    Picture
Mollie and Wildling have found their latest hiding place, under the coffee table in the lounge. I've made up a bed under there, they love looking up through the clear glass, observing the World above!

Both cats have settled in well at our new home, like us enjoying all the extra space and warmth. At the moment, they don't seem to want to go out, which is always a bonus in my book. Myself and Darrell have always had indoor cats and we would like Mollie and Wildling to be the same. They had such a traumatic time before they came to our door, it seems likely, they will always avoid the outside, running away from anyone who comes near, excluding Darrell and myself of course!

    Elche!

    Image description
Yesterday it was a quick shopping trip to Elche to buy a new freezer. I still like to cook in bulk, freezing what I can, making my own roast potatoes and freezing my own vegetables; it makes for far more economical cooking. I started this economy drive last year, when Darrell went to Australia and I was surviving on very little money. I don't intend to go back to my old wasteful ways. In Spain you can cook as cheap or expensive as you want; I prefer cheap. We are both saving money hard, hopefully to buy a house in the very near future, so every penny counts right now.

I hate going to Elche at the best of times. It is a large sprawling city, with a spider like network of roads, many of which lead nowhere. As usual we got lost driving in and lost coming back.

We went to Carrefour first; I had seen a relatively competitively priced chest freezer, for 199'00€. Darrell thought it was  over priced, so we went to Media Markt, similar to Curry's PC World in Britain, where they had an upright freezer for 149'00€. It looked like an own brand model, called 'ok!' Having squeezed it in the back of our tiny Opal Corsa, removing all the packaging at the shop, just like a pair of pikeys, transporting it in the worst way possible, we finally got the thing home. Leaving it to settle overnight, we turned it on this morning. Fingers crossed it will still work and I can get back to being the perfect housewife that I am!

Just a quick blog this morning, as I have to pop into work to help put the Christmas decorations up. I wanted to ask any readers of 'Spanish Views,' if they have any top tips for cooking and eating in or out economically, please can you message me, using the form below, with your suggestions, for an upcoming blog and I will be sure to add your comments.

    Thanks as always!

    Have a great Tuesday y'all!

    Weather!

Just a word or two about the weather today. Darrell has been suffering terribly during the Spanish winter, which really has only just started. Darrell hasn't experienced a winter at all for about two years, having lived in Australia for a prolonged period of time. The sudden drop in temperature, in the evening has knocked him for six. Let me put this into perspective. The evenings do feel cold in Gran Alacant, but it is nothing compared to the UK. We never experience 'below freezing' temperatures although the huge drop between day and night is noticeable. The two photographs above show the glorious Spanish sunshine, during the day; twenty degrees and above. At night, temperatures can fall as low as 4-6 degrees, a massive drop and a bit of a shock to the system, especially after the hot summer we have had.

At the moment, we have to wrap up warm as best we can. We do have aircon in the new house, but can't get it to work on the 'heat' setting; we will try again later! If we have no luck, we will have to buy a calor gas fire, the cheapest way to heat in Spain, with a bottle only costing about 16€, compared to over 30€ in the UK. The one thing I wont be using is electricity to heat the house; the most expensive way to keep the cold at bay. Electricity prices in Spain are sky high, a lot dearer than back home. Some properties have had central heating installed, at a very reasonable price. The last person I spoke to, had ten radiators fitted, at a cost of about 3000€, great value for money. These systems use natural gas, which is a cheaper alternative and a fantastic way to keep warm.

Temperatures are expected to fall further over the next few days, already in parts of the Alicante region, snow has fallen, mainly in mountainous areas. Gran Alacant is highly unlikely to experience any snow fall, but at this time of year, it is always best to plan ahead. A little trip to Leroy Merlin on Monday to get a new gas fire, before winter really takes hold!

    Keep warm wherever you are!
