Staring me in the Ears

I was sitting on my terrace earlier, trying to think of something positive to write that would inspire people during these very difficult times. I racked my brain for ages when the answer was staring me in the ears which is my new saying for the week. Directly outside my house is a busy main road and next to that is open countryside. During normal times, I'd just hear the steady thrum of car engines and the occasional bus, but it was different today.

I could hear nature in all its glory. A cacophony of sound that lifted my spirits and made me glad to be alive.  The birds were whistling louder than I've ever heard before. Crickets were chirping and the occasional wasp visited me in search of pollen.

I've lived in Alicante, Spain, for twenty years and I can honestly say that I've never fully appreciated the sounds of nature. Maybe it was the noise pollution or the sheer volume of people on the streets that made me ignorant of this auditory delight.  I think nature is taking a deep breath and enjoying its holiday from mankind. When this isolation is all over, I've promised myself to take more walks in the countryside and enjoy the freedom that we all take for granted.
