Raising money for Elche Orphanage!

My local square, Sierra Mar, pulled out all the stops for Elche Orphanage yesterday. The local bars and restaurants had organised a fund raiser, providing presents for the children and hosting a Christmas Fate , with Christmas carols, Santa Claus, a raffle, tombola, and the stall I hosted 'Guess the weight of the Christmas Cake!'  Lee, Bar Manager at Zest, had made a wonderful cake, contestants guessing it's weight, between 3lb and 6lb.  Jennifer won, guessing 4lb 1oz.

The square was busy, with locals, families and children, all enjoying the Christmas atmospere.  It was a very traditional evening, something I haven't experienced in many years and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  With one notable exception, Dawn, 'The No Wives Club' were in attendance and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Lexi Legs was there, having her legs waxed for charity; she looked fabulous as usual.  It was actually nice to sit down and spend some quality, if not a little drunken time with her, which I have not had the chance to do previously.

Some of the children from the orphanage were there, which was fantastic.  What a lovely bunch they were, so polite and curteous, offered greetings in English and were truly warm and full of life, enjoying everything everyone had done for them.

The whole event in the Square is really down to the hard work and dedication of Pam Hardy.  Pam, a local resident often gives her time for charity and is a local treasure.  This community, in Gran Alacant, are one of the most philathropic, I have ever come across.  My bad experience with a large multinational charity, in the UK, had until recently tainted my view of all charities and the work they do.  The residents of this neighbourhood have restored my faith, in the good work others can do, at a local level, for those in need.  The concept of true charitable giving, is alive and well in Gran Alacant, and I am very proud to be a part of the community, playing a small role in making the lives of others better!
