From a new life in spain, to an old life in britain, 'roaming brit' documents uncertain times!

Picture

On 31st January 2016, my partner and I left Southampton to start a new life as Expats in Gran Alacant, on the Costa Blanca. This blog will document our journey, as we navigate the Spanish system, travelling a path untried and untested. With Brexit looming, political turmoil in Europe and an unpredictable future, harsh decisions have to be made. Illness, family bonds and a Change of heart all make for challenging times in a life of a 'Roaming Brit!'

Darrell has booked his flights to Australia and will be leaving in a few weeks, to stay with his Mother for a while, while she undergoes treatment for cancer.  I will be staying in Spain and working through the summer season.  I would have loved to have gone to see my Mother-In-Law, but do need to stay behind and work, look after the cats and Jamie of course.  My home is now here, I have made many new, wonderful friends and know I will not be feeling lonely!

Work

Picture
I think the summer season has just well and truly kicked off, at least for us in Gran Alacant.  Last night was the busiest night we have had, so far, this year at work.  One day you come into work and it's quiet, the next day it is packed to the rafters, as it was last night.  I was on my own cooking as well, which made it harder, although  the adrenaline rush you get, working in a busy kitchen is great and I enjoyed every minute of it.  The last time I worked in such a demanding, bustling environment, was in 2002, when we had our own business.  That first Bank Holiday we opened was heaving.  Yesterday took me right back to that time!

I have applied for a few writing jobs recently, both employed, voluntary and on a freelance basis.  Although I love my current  job, I also wanted to do something I love as well.  Since writing and literature is my first love, it was natural, that I should try and do something in that line. There are a few openings for writers at the moment, in publications and online websites. As an expat, I have a view of life that not only differs from others who live and work here, but also has a unique take on the up's and down's of making a new start, in a different country, with completely unaccustomed challenges and an outlook on sustainability so at odds to what I am used to!

Also I have applied to do some acting, yes acting.  Acting is something I always wanted to do, ever since I was a child.  I have had my moments on the stage, certainly not in a professional capacity, but I do love standing up in front of an audience.  There is a comprehensive Amateur Dramatics community in our region and I would like to play a small role in it, in whatever capacity they think fit.  To be honest, I am so busy having moved to Spain, there really doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day anymore.  For me, someone who likes to keep occupied, I am thrilled at this life change.  Moving to Spain has been the catalyst for many things.  All life changing and positive. This is just another part of a process, that will allow me to complete my journey of final fulfillment!

Had a few drinks at a rather packed Zest, my local after work.  It has become somewhat of a Sunday tradition, popping to my favourite bar for a few pints on pay day.  A warm welcome as ever from everyone there.  I was thinking the other day, about just how happy everyone who lives here seems.  Of course much of that contentment has a lot to do with the holiday nature of the place, the weather and the slower pace of life. Gradually I am getting used to the optimistic and progressive atmosphere, a welcome change from before!

Just a quick blog today.  I am on a split shift and back at work at 7.30pm, but just enough time for my 'Thought for Today!'

Wealth!

I used to think wealth was about money, possessions and assets.  I realise now, wealth encompasses a great deal more. The people in your life, the happiness you feel, the problems you endure and the knowledge you acquire, all make for a wealthier, happier and longer lasting experience!  Living life well, makes you rich beyond your dreams!

    A place to call home
Finally, a place we can call home.  A community of like minded individuals, who used to call Britain home.  Now Spain is our choice, an altogether gentler, happier, sunnier and safer experience!
