From a new life in spain, to an old life in britain, 'roaming brit' documents uncertain times!

Picture

On 31st January 2016, my partner and I left Southampton to start a new life as Expats in Gran Alacant, on the Costa Blanca. This blog will document our journey, as we navigate the Spanish system, travelling a path untried and untested. With Brexit looming, political turmoil in Europe and an unpredictable future, harsh decisions have to be made. Illness, family bonds and a Change of heart all make for challenging times in a life of a 'Roaming Brit!'

I popped into Zest, early on Saturday morning.  I had been without wifi for twenty four hours and had a blog to finish and a deadline to meet for Google.   I spent the next few hours, sat in the sunshine, finishing work, I had started the day before, whilst drinking the odd one or two pints.  Two friends turned up and Darrell and I spent the afternoon drinking and chatting.  It was a lovely day.  Dawn left for work at four O'clock, Pete came with us for a few more pints and to continue the conversation.

I had some dinner at Aquarius, who have the best fish and chips in Gran Alacant.  I just happened to bump into the two owners of The Gran Alacant Advertiser, who came over to have a word about the article I had written for the next issue.  They asked if I would like to write a column each month, along the same lines as the one I had submitted. How could I refuse.

People who know me, understand my passion for writing.  Ultimately I hope to write on a professional basis, so to be given an opportunity to contribute to our local magazine, is a prospect I can not turn down.  I want to talk about things that concern our local community on a monthly basis and just what people are talking about, the issues that are important to them.

Work

It was another busy weekend at work.  The busier it gets, the more I am enjoying it, I have to say.  We had two new members of staff start last week, who are Spanish, they are lovely.  I have been promised, a few lessons in Spanish, which will be great.  Here are some photo's from the weekend!

Darrell has finally had his flight to Australia confirmed.  He will leave Spain, flying to London, Singapore, Sydney and Perth in early August and will not be returning until March.

After much soul searching we have both decided, it will be best if he spends as long as he can with his Mother, who is ill.  Darrel intends to find work in Western Australia, where wages are much higher than those in Spain.  The money he earns will enable us to finance our life in Spain, allow me to concentrate on my writing career and teaching qualification, as well as empower me to work on a part time basis.

At a time when Darrell's Mother needs him, I have nothing but support for the decision he has ultimately taken, but one which I wholeheartedly agree with.  Many people who live in Spain, have partners and husbands who do work abroad for periods of time.  It allows them to fund their lifestyle, especially when the working situation in Spain is not ideal.  In time the arrangement may change.  It will of course, depend very much on what direction my career takes over here.

I have made many friends in Spain, one of which I was having a beer with last night, with Darrell. Once we explained, what was going to happen, he was quick to say how he and many others would take care of me.  Not that I need taking care of, but the people out here, really do look out for those, who they regard as friends.  I could  quite easily return to The UK, when Darrell leaves, but really, why?  I have made a life in Gran Alacant, work for a living, writing for a local magazine and am happy where I am.  There is nothing left for me in The UK, and this is a perfect base for the both of us, at this time.  Jamie will be staying with me for the duration, what more do I need!

Gossip and Rumour

When one allows a mistake to follow one to Spain, one only has oneself to blame. When I originally allowed this person, to come and live with us, I was unaware of her true nature.  Since her arrival, things have gone from bad to worse.  Drinking every single day, spending money, she should have used to pay her rent and bills.  Taking money off others and not paying it back. Sacked from jobs, because quite frankly, her behaviour was unacceptable.  Breaking into my home, drunk and spreading lies and rumours around, about not only us, who opened our home to her, but also others, who were supposed to be her friends.

It is sad that a person, I used to hold in some regard, has turned into a gossip spreading manipulator, who has upset a lot of those we know out here, least of all Jamie, who's name she has dragged through the mud, as well of course, as us.  People like her, will not lost long, because people do not like who she is and what she is doing to others.  I was approached by a friend, last night, who was upset, about what she had said about myself and others we know.  Luckily the friends we do have  are fantastic and well able to stick up for themselves and their friends.  They have seen my ex lodger run rough shod through this area, causing trouble everywhere they go.  This is absolutely unacceptable.  It is about time, she packed her bags and left, before she gets in serious trouble.  The three of us were warned about her, shortly after she arrived, sadly we did not take the advice of others, as we should have done. I did my best!

WiFi

Have just got back from the GA Centre. We finally have wifi back.  Apparently it was our fault we lost it, as we pressed the reset button.  Why the button is there on the router in the first place, is beyond me!

    A place to call home
Finally, a place we can call home.  A community of like minded individuals, who used to call Britain home.  Now Spain is our choice, an altogether gentler, happier, sunnier and safer experience!
